Green Day

The lowdown on carbon reduction and renewable energy.

With the population growing, pollution rising and natural resources diminishing, renewable energy sources that are smart, clean and efficient appear to be way forward.

Green technology has advanced hugely in recent years and forward thinking workplaces now have more options than ever before when it comes to minimising their carbon footprints.Often potential customers are also specifically attracted to businesses that can demonstrate unrivalled green credentials so it really can be a win-win situation for those that get it right.

For businesses and organisations that are seriously committed to reducing their carbon footprints as much as possible, new renewable technology is being unveiled all the time.Although this technology often requires a significant up-front investment, in some cases it can eliminate energy bills and even generate an income through the Feed-In Tariff, which pays a fee for each unit of electricity exported back to the grid.

One such building that has recently embraced this type of technology is The Co-operative Group’s new £105m Manchester headquarters, which opened at the end of last year and has been named the world’s most environmentally friendly building. It incorporates an innovative water recycling system and a natural heating and cooling system that draws air from the basement and IT system and redistributes it around the building.

The headquarters of the National Trust is also unsurprisingly one of the greenest offices in the UK. An array of photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof provide 30% of the annual electricity use and it also has some ingenious ideas like the carpets in the building being made from wool from the Trust’s flocks of Herdwick sheep and ventilation snouts on the roof which come from recycled beer cans.

However, for an organisation to benefit from becoming more energy efficient, even small changes can make a difference. There is no need for businesses to rebuild their premises or move to a hi-tech eco friendly building. There are many ways to save money and become more environmentally friendly - take a look over the page for some great ideas.
