PPE at SlingsbyPersonal Protective Equipment (PPE) Legislation

The Inside Track On PPE Legislation.

Employers have duties concerning the provision and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at work under the requirements of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended).

What is PPE?

PPE is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. It can include items such as safety helmets and hard hats, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses.

What do the Regulations require?

The main requirement of the regulations is that PPE is supplied and used at work wherever there are risks to health and safety that cannot be controlled by any other means. Employers that flout health and safety legislation can face substantial fines or even prison.

The Regulations also require that PPE is:

  • Properly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose.
  • Maintained and stored properly.
  • Provided with instructions on how to use it safely.
  • Used correctly by employees.

PPE 2DID YOU KNOW...

...Your PPE May Not Be The Genuine Article?

In recent years there have been reports of an increasing amount of counterfeit personal protective equipment (PPE) finding its way into UK workplaces, including gloves, high visibility vests and goggles that have been badly produced using sub-standard materials.

It’s feared that austerity measures are leading to this increase in counterfeit PPE as businesses attempt to save money, which in turn is putting lives at risk.

In some cases counterfeit products have even been discovered on the shelves of well-known retailers. The Reflective Equipment Manufacturers Association (REMA), found substandard high visibility garments being sold by two of the UK’s largest supermarket firms and a car accessory chain. Here at Slingsby, quality is something that we pride ourselves on, as a supplier that has been established for over 120 years, our reputation for supplying high quality items is second to none, you can rely on PPE and other workplace equipment being genuinely certified to both British and European standards, and adhering to all current workplace legislation.

Buying the right PPE is a big responsibility and this type of equipment should always be purchased through a reputable supplier because safety equipment that doesn’t perform properly isn’t just inconvenient, it can actually cost lives. Always ensure that your PPE is certified to the appropriate British or European standards.
