EN 131: Ladder Legislation – British Ladder Standards

Falls from height remain the most common workplace accident and fatality, with many involving a fall from a ladder. Anyone falling more than 2 meters is likely to sustain serious injury, so even using a stepladder can be a risk.

With around two million ladders in daily use across the UK, it is essential that people have the right guidance and training needed to help ensure working at height is as safe as possible.

British Ladder Standards

Legislation surrounding the use of ladders and access equipment is covered by The Work at Height Regulations 2005; however British Ladder Standards BS 2037, BS 1129 and the original EN 131 have been withdrawn and are replaced by the European EN 131 standard covering all types of portable ladders.

BS2037/BS1129 Class 1 (heavy duty & industrial use) is replaced by EN131: Professional

BS2037/BS1129 Class 3 (domestic use) is replaced by EN131: Non-professional

The European EN 131 standard improves ladder safety by making ladders wider, stronger and sturdier and introduces stabilisers on ladders over 3m.

To Conclude

With these Standards in place it is important for businesses to take the necessary precautions to help negate ladder related injuries. Safety bodies such as the HSE, Trading Standards and Insurance Companies will expect manufacturers and main users to comply.
