Traffic Safety Tips & Legislation

Traffic Safety Tips in the Workplace

Pedestrian and vehicle routes should be kept separate where possible. One-way systems are the safest, as they reduce the need for drivers to reverse. If segregation is not possible, markings for pedestrian and vehicle routes need to be made clear, with the use of traffic safety barriers, signs, and crossings.

Entrances and exits should be separate for vehicles and pedestrians. Where channels do cross, there should be clearly marked measures, such as dropped kerbs, bollards, deterrent paving, etc.

Traffic routes should be wide enough for the largest vehicles on site, with surfaces remaining firm, even, and well drained. Slopes and blind corners should also be avoided where possible and clear of obstruction. Can’t avoid blind spots? Consider using mirrors for better visibility.

Control the speed on site with use of speed ramps, chicanes and rumble strips. Enforcing speed limits with the use of road signs is another option, but they need to be properly enforced and consistent throughout the site.

Signs should be the same as those used on public roads and according to the highway code. They should be well positioned, clean, and visible. Workplaces should always have sufficient lighting but ensure there are no sudden changes to lighting levels that could affect a driver.

The need to reverse should be kept to a minimum. When reversing is necessary, ensure vehicles don’t enter pedestrian zones with adequate safety barriers and clearly marked reversing areas. You should also ensure the appropriate safety equipment is installed on vehicles, such as flashing lights, reversing alarms, and reversing sensors.

Parking areas should be clearly marked and kept separate from commercial car parks. Commercial areas should have dedicated spaces for loading and unloading.

Types of vehicles used should depend on the purpose they are intended for. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 set the standard for this. Most vehicles should meet this standard but there may be more specific standards for mobile plants.

Maintenance of vehicles should also be kept in good working order and drivers should be fully trained to operate the vehicles.
