How to increase your activity at work.

With recent news reports citing sitting for long periods of time as being as dangerous as smoking, concerns are mounting that Britons with office jobs spend 75% of their day sitting down, leading to an increased risk of serious illness or even premature death. Take a look at the following hints and tips to try and increase your daily activity:

  • Take regular breaks away from your desk, even if it is just to stretch your legs on the way to the photocopier or drinks machine.
  • Consider the use of a fitness tracker to monitor the number of steps or distance walked per day. 10,000 steps is seen as a healthy target to work towards, however many sedentary workers only walk between 1,000 and 3,000 steps.
  • Take a walk at lunchtime rather than eating at your desk.
  • Walk or cycle to work or consider parking further away from your office.
  • Always take the stairs instead of the lift.
  • Stand up when you are on the telephone, or set a reminder to do some stretches throughout the day.
  • Consider the use of standing desks or sit stand stools.

Sound surroundings - workplace benefitsHow To Motivate Staff

A great working environment is key to a motivated workforce

When it comes to motivating and encouraging employees to maximise their potential, there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to go about it because what turns one person on might turn the next person off there is no one-size fits all solution.

However, one thing that all motivated, productive and happy workforces have in common, is they all work in great surroundings that are comfortable, well thought out and fit for purpose.;

A great workspace nearly always forms the foundations in the best work environments, but it can be easy to overlook and getting it right is no mean feat. There is often lots of emphasis on painting walls in bright, funky colours and creating ‘breakout zones’ but this is only a small part of the task.

On a far more basic level, employees need to be comfortable at work as dictated by The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. A key part of this means ensuring the temperature is just right. People that are too hot are likely to feel lethargic and contrary to what some ‘experts’ profess, employees who are cold will rarely work faster in an attempt to warm up!

Lighting is another important factor and making a few simple changes can have a big impact and help to simplify all types of tasks. People receive approximately 85 per cent of their information through their sense of sight, which makes lighting vitally important. Choosing an appropriate lighting solution for your workplace can also help to reduce shadows and eye fatigue, as well as the risk of accidents from moving objects.

For computer users, quality lighting products can reduce screen glare and help organisations comply with The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment (DSE)) Regulations 1992. In addition, introducing new lighting products can often reduce electricity costs – so it’s worth putting the subject under the spotlight!

Finally, it’s important to consider the design of individual workspaces within the workplace. For employees who are on their feet all day, you need to consider how to reduce fatigue and the strain that excessive standing can have on feet, legs, lower back, neck and shoulders.

Equally, for office workers and those who sit down all day, careful consideration must be given to the seating that you provide. Research reveals that 80% of office workers fear they are risking their health and causing themselves potential back problems by spending too much time at their desks and in many cases they are right to be worried with experts warning that sedentary lifestyles are dangerous to health.

There are a huge range of products available that workers can use, regardless of whether they are sitting or standing, that will ensure they stay injury free, comfortable and productive throughout the day.
