How To Kit Out Your Business Washroom Areas

Maintaining great workplace hygiene stems from good washroom facilities and although it might seem a relatively insignificant part of your premises, these facilities often reveal how seriously your organisation takes the health and wellbeing of both visitors and employees.

A poorly maintained washroom, with empty soap dispensers and no hand drying facilities, is a big turn off and immediately sets a bad impression as well as highlighting the fact that if this is dirty, every other part of the premises is likely to be just as bad.

There’s no excuse for offering substandard washrooms either because ultimately maintaining a clean environment and offering basic hand washing and drying facilities requires minimal investment.

Generally, under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, separate facilities should be provided for men and women, unless the facility will only be used by one person at a time and the door can be locked from the inside.

When designing washrooms, all internal walls and floors should feature a material that permits wet cleaning, such as ceramic tiling or a plastic coated surface. The rooms should be well-lit and ventilated with washing facilities in the immediate vicinity that offer both hot and cold water.

Toilet paper needs to be stored in an appropriate dispenser or holder and soap dispensers are usually preferable and more hygienic than bars of soap, which can harbour and transfer bacteria. In addition, paper towel dispensers or hand dryers should be available and in facilities that will be used by women, sanitary bins, or other similar products must be installed. Workplaces that want to go a step further might also consider offering automatic air fresheners and toilet seat sanitisers.

Once you’ve got the basics in place, there are a whole host of additional products and facilities to consider depending on the individual workplace and its requirements. For premises where the work is particularly strenuous, dirty or where skin can become contaminated by harmful materials, it may be necessary to provide showers or baths. These are also useful in workplaces that actively promote cycling to work or other activity schemes and this will often lead to changing areas and lockers being installed.

In certain workplaces, or in washrooms that are open to the public, baby-changing facilities could be provided. These come in a range of shapes and sizes depending on the space available, from counter top units through to wallmounted versions that fold up flush to the wall when they’re not in use.
